# Calculator methodology — 2026 employment income

This working calculator estimates annual income tax for Alberta and Ontario using published **2026** amounts, checked on **October 20, 2026**. It does not forecast 2027 tax rules. Income earned in 2026 is generally reported on the return filed in 2027. [CRA: current-year tax rates](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/tax-rates-brackets/current-year.html)

This is a planning estimate, not tax-filing software. No CPA signoff or CRA approval is claimed. The public educational scope is limited to the assumptions below; a qualified professional should review any filing or personal tax decision.

## Supported situation

The calculator assumes a single adult with no dependants, age 18–64 throughout the year, resident in Canada for the full year and in the selected province on December 31. Income comes entirely from one employer outside Quebec and is fully pensionable and insurable.

Enter annual gross employment income and an eligible RRSP deduction. RRSP room is not checked. The cash result assumes that the entered RRSP amount is contributed from the employment income shown. Optionally enter **income tax withheld**, excluding CPP and EI.

Other situations require additional inputs and calculations: self-employment, corporate income, dividends, capital gains, rental income, other provinces, multiple employers, partial-year residency, age-based contribution changes, dependants and other deductions or credits.

## Rules included

Each bracket rate applies only to the income inside that bracket. The thresholds below are upper limits; the final rate has no upper limit. [CRA: 2026 tax brackets](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/tax-rates-brackets/current-year.html)

| Jurisdiction | Upper income thresholds | Corresponding rates |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Federal | $58,523; $117,045; $181,440; $258,482; unlimited | 14%; 20.5%; 26%; 29%; 33% |
| Alberta | $61,200; $154,259; $185,111; $246,813; $370,220; unlimited | 8%; 10%; 12%; 13%; 14%; 15% |
| Ontario | $53,891; $107,785; $150,000; $220,000; unlimited | 5.05%; 9.15%; 11.16%; 12.16%; 13.16% |

The federal basic personal amount is $16,452 through net income of $181,440, decreasing linearly to $14,829 at $258,482. The Canada employment amount is the lesser of gross employment income and $1,501. These and eligible base CPP/EI amounts receive a 14% federal credit. [CRA: indexed personal amounts](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/frequently-asked-questions-individuals/adjustment-personal-income-tax-benefit-amounts.html), [CRA: federal calculation formulas](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/payroll/t4127-payroll-deductions-formulas/t4127-jan/t4127-jan-payroll-deductions-formulas-computer-programs.html)

Alberta uses a $22,769 basic personal amount and 8% credits for that amount, base CPP and EI. The supplemental Alberta credit is zero within this calculator’s restricted credit scope. [CRA: Alberta amounts](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/payroll/t4032-payroll-deductions-tables/t4032ab-jan/t4032ab-january-general-information.html), [CRA: Alberta supplemental-credit formula](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/payroll/t4127-payroll-deductions-formulas/t4127-jan/t4127-jan-payroll-deductions-formulas-computer-programs.html)

CPP uses the $3,500 exemption and $74,600 first ceiling: 4.95% base CPP plus 1% first additional CPP. CPP2 is 4% on earnings between $74,600 and $85,000. Maximum employee contributions are $3,519.45 base, $711 first additional and $416 CPP2. EI is 1.63% of earnings up to $68,900, capped at $1,123.07. The enhanced CPP components reduce taxable income; base CPP and EI receive credits. [CRA: contribution amounts](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/payroll/t4032-payroll-deductions-tables/t4032ab-jan/t4032ab-january-general-information.html), [CRA: credit and deduction formulas](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/payroll/t4127-payroll-deductions-formulas/t4127-jan/t4127-jan-payroll-deductions-formulas-computer-programs.html)

Ontario includes its $12,989 basic personal amount, 5.05% credits, surtax, $300 basic tax-reduction amount and Health Premium. Surtax is 20% of basic provincial tax above $5,818 plus 36% above $7,446. The basic reduction is capped by tax otherwise payable and phases out when that tax reaches $600. The premium is computed separately from taxable income and remains payable even when other included credits remove regular provincial tax. [CRA: Ontario formulas and amounts](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/payroll/t4032-payroll-deductions-tables/t4032on-jan/t4032on-january-general-information.html)

Ontario LIFT is included for the assumed single eligible worker: the lesser of $875 and 5.05% of employment income, reduced by 5% of adjusted net income above $32,500. It cannot exceed remaining regular Ontario tax and cannot reduce the Health Premium. This simplified calculation must not be applied to a household with a spouse without the required family-income inputs. [Ontario: LIFT eligibility and calculation](https://www.ontario.ca/page/low-income-workers-tax-credit)

CRA’s July 2026 update confirms no Alberta or Ontario changes to the January formulas. [CRA: July update](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/payroll/t4127-payroll-deductions-formulas/t4127-jul/t4127-jul-payroll-deductions-formulas.html)

## Reading the result

- **Income tax:** federal plus provincial estimate. Ontario’s provincial amount includes its Health Premium.
- **Cash remaining:** gross income less income tax, employee CPP/CPP2, EI and the entered RRSP contribution. An additional field reports cash before RRSP.
- **Effective income-tax rate:** income tax divided by gross employment income; CPP/EI are separate.
- **Marginal income-tax rate:** estimated additional income tax on the next $1 of gross employment income, holding RRSP constant. Credit changes and enhanced CPP deductions can make it differ from the simple sum of bracket rates. CPP/EI contributions themselves are excluded from this rate.
- **Refund/balance:** entered income tax withheld minus estimated income tax. Positive means a potential refund; negative means potential tax owing. Blank withholding means unknown. Explicit zero means no income tax was withheld.

Refundable benefits, including Canada Workers Benefit, other deductions/credits, instalments and CPP/EI overpayment refunds are excluded. This can materially change a real refund, particularly at lower incomes. EI is shown before any low-income premium refund. The tool therefore labels the result an **income-tax-only refund/balance estimate**.

The engine carries fractional annual arithmetic internally and rounds displayed monetary outputs to cents. Actual payroll and return rounding can differ. Product displays should normally show whole-dollar estimates rather than imply cent-level filing accuracy.

## Validation and release criteria

The dependency-free module runs in a browser or Node. Its automated tests check independently worked Alberta/Ontario examples, every federal and Alberta bracket boundary, CPP/CPP2 and EI thresholds, federal personal-amount phase-out, Ontario surtax/Health Premium/LIFT, RRSP effects, unknown versus zero withholding, invalid inputs and component reconciliation.

Before offering professional filing or advice, the appointed provider should independently compare representative cases against CRA tools and tax-return calculations, sign off on assumptions, and own annual updates. This document records source verification and implementation tests; it does not claim CPA review has happened.

## Additional scope clarification

This is an annual tax-planning estimate, not a payslip or payroll-withholding calculator. Actual CPP and payroll results can differ beyond rounding for irregular or part-year employment. Bankruptcy, minimum-tax and incarceration cases are excluded.
